Lot Essay

Williamson (loc. cit.) discusses a comparable Virgin and Child, and argues that it was probably executed in Lorraine around 1310-30. Similar pieces have been associated with the valley of the Meuse and Cologne, but may simply have been transported there from Lorraine. Another related group in Berlin (Demmler, loc. cit.) was there described as Lothringen, circa 1330, but shares the same squarish facial type and swaying stance with the right leg splayed sideways also found in the two other Virgins.
