Lot Essay

A study for the figure of Abraham in The Sacrifice of Melchizedek, in the church of Verolanuova, Brescia, A. Pallucchini, L'opera completa di Giambattista Tiepolo, Milan, 1968, no. 127, illustrated. The Verolanuova painting was probably commissioned around 1735 by the Conte Gambara, podestà of Brescia, along with a painting of The Gathering of the Manna for the same church. The oil sketches for both paintings are in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires.
A study for the figure Melchizedek for the same painting was sold at Victor Bloch sale, Sotheby's, 19 November 1963, lot 93, illustrated.
