Lot Essay

James Mundy kindly pointed out that the present drawing comes from a notebook Zuccaro made in England between March and October 1575. Three drawings from this album are in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin. The first two are copies after Holbein's lost picture of The Triumph of Riches and Poverty, painted for the Steelyard Guild, London, and the third is inspired by Holbein's Dance of Death (Inv. nos. KK. 12887-8 and KK. 155 1879). The latter is of the same size and numbered in the same way as this sheet. A drawing from the same album, numbered 27, was sold in these Rooms, 7 July 1981, lot 15, illustrated.
