Lot Essay

Lorenzo de' Medici, known as il Magnifico, bought a castle in Poggio a Caiano, near Florence, in 1479 and commissioned the architect Giuliano da Sangallo to turn the building into a villa to use as a retreat. The salone was frescoed by Andrea del Sarto and Jacopo Pontormo. The villa is surrounded by a garden and a model farm.
