This drawing was bought by Barnard directly from the artist when the latter was living in Richmond in 1767. A drawing by Zuccarelli of the same size and technique as the present sheet, sold at Sotheby's, 26 November 1970, lot 56, illustrated, was inscribed by Barnard on the mount 'No. 795, I purchased this pair of Colored Drawings Numbered 795 of Mr. Zuccharelli at Richmond An^o 1767. J.B'. The present drawing, also numbered 795, is evidently en suite with the ex-Sotheby's drawing.
A slightly larger drawing sold in these Rooms, 12 April 1983, lot 24, illustrated, was bought the same year by Barnard directly from the artist, as is attested by an inscription on the mount.
