Little is known about the life of the painter and engraver Chantereau. The few extant drawings, the largest group of which is in Stockholm, show the influence of Chardin, Watteau and his followers, P. Bjurström, French Drawings, the Eighteenth Century, Stockholm, 1982, nos. 897-906, illustrated.
The present drawing is particularly interesting in that it shows the direct influence of one of the main followers of Watteau, Jean-Baptiste Pater. The composition of the drawing is similar to that of Pater's picture L'Hiver; both include a frozen lake with two skaters in the centre, flanked by a castle on the right, F. Ingersoll-Smouse, Pater, Paris, 1928, no. 581, fig. 157. Pater's picture is one of a series of ovals of the Four Seasons.
