Children of Ulster

signed upper left W. Conor, and signed and inscribed on the reverse,
oil on canvas
40 x 30in. (101.6 x 76.2cm)
Provenance
George and Maura McClelland, Dublin
Literature
William Conor, Judith Wilson, Dundonald 1981, illustrated in colour page 80.

During the 1930's Conor continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy and other provincial exhibitions his charming and very personal interpretation of the children and daily life of Ulster. This painting typifies the artist's ability to capture not only the industrial and social suffering of the working classes, but also the gaiety and spirit of the people of Ireland. This painting which was executed in the early 1930's compares favourably to The Lost Child, sold by Christie's, at Belfast Castle in October 1989 for #28,600
