The 1909 International Football League match between Scotland and England was played in Glasgow with the Scots winning 3-1. Jimmy Brownlie is still regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers to grace the Scottish game. His career began with Blantyre Victoria and he joined Third Lanark in 1906, retiring in 1923. He then became the Dundee United secretary/manager between 1923 and 1931, coming out of retirement again to return as manager at Dundee United in 1934. He held this position until 1936 when he became joint managing-director, retiring finally in June 1939.
In a distinguished career he played for Scotland at full International level on no less than sixteen occasions between 1909 and 1914. He also appeared for the Scottish League on fourteen occasions. His final appearances in a Scotland jersey were during the 1918/19 Victory Internationals
