G A B R I E L "S I D" K I M P T O N Born in Leavesden in 1888, Kimpton had a trial for Watford in 1909 before joining his only Senior British Club, Southampton, in September 1910. He made his debut for the club against Crystal Palace in October 1910 and during the next ten years he played 141 Southern League games for the club scoring 27 goals. He also made eight F.A. Cup appearances scoring three goals. A very popular player, he was given a Benefit Match prior to his departure to Thornycrofts in 1920. There followed a season as player coach with Polish Club LKS Pagon in which he won a Championship medal, and thereafter periods as Czechoslovakian player coach and French National Team coach before returning to England in 1928 as trainer with Coventry City. Kimpton returned to Czechoslovakia yet again in the early 1930's as National Team Coach and took the team to the World Cup Final, played on the 10th June 1934, against Italy at the P.N.F. Stadium in Rome. In front of a crowd of 55,000, the Italians finally defeated the Czechs 2-1 after extra time. In 1936 "Sid" moved to Racing Club Paris and coached the side to a memorable "Double" that season, winning the French Championship with 44 points and defeating F.C.O. Charterville 1-0 in the Cup Final, in front of 39,726 spectators. This was only the second such achievement by R.C. Paris in their history. In 1940 "Sid" was taken prisoner of war and in 1945 ended his footballing career as manager of the French club Le Havre Athletic. Kimpton died in Leavesden on 15th February 1968.
