In the 1893 Scotland v England International, played on 1st April at Richmond, Scotland were defeated by England 5-2.
In an interview at the age of 87 by Eric Todd, Holmes mentions his proudest possession as being the special cap awarded him by the F.A., as one of the four professionals who played in all three Internationals against Scotland in 1891, 92 and 93. The other three were John Holt and Edgar Chadwick of Everton and Billy Bassett of W.B.A. England were winners on each occasion - the only instance of such a hat-trick against Scotland until Wartime International football. Holmes admitted that, in the last game, England had a real fright.
"It were at Richmond and we were losing 2-1 at half-time. One of the F.A. chaps sais to me: 'What's wrong with our team, Holmes?' so I sais: 'Well, sir, its t' them hamateurs. If they'd only feed the wingers, we could run these Scots into t'ground'. In t' second half, Bassett and
Spikeseley had as much of the ball as they wanted, and we got four more goals and Scotland didn't get any'."
