This collection was formerly the property of H.A. Ayling (South Wick and Sussex) who as a player appeared for Southdown, Southwick, and Sussex County Football Clubs. Ayling is probably best remembered as the linesman in the 1919-20 F.A. Cup Final between Aston Villa and Huddersfield Town. He started refereeing regularly circa 1897 and was Vice-Chairman of the Sussex Referees' Committee (see also lots 255 and 256)
