Lot Essay

The original model of this medal cabinet, with different central medallions on a tortoiseshell ground is now in Versailles and was supplied by Antoine-Robert Gaudreaus, (1682-1746) in 1738 for the cabinet interieur of Louis XV at Versailles, the bronze mounts and possibly the piece itself, were modelled by the Slodtz Brothers.
The Versailles model is illustrated in Alexandre Pradere, French Furniture Makers, The Art of the Ebeniste from Louis XIV to the Revolution 1989, Page 144.
