A Louis XIV style kingwood, marquetry and gilt lacquered brass mounted coffre fort, painted overall with pierced scrolled lockplates and hinges, the hinged rectangular top fitted to the reverse with two hinged panelled flaps, each enclosing two secret compartments, and centred by a shield-shaped silver gilt plaque inscribed, 'This charter chest which originally belonged to Mary Queen of Scots was left at Cadzow Castle, on Her Majesty's departure for the Battle of Langside and afterwards became successively the property of the Earl of Mar and the Right Honourable Lord Belhaven of Wishaw, it was acquired by John Watson of Earnock and Nielsland, 11th December 1873', the hinged fall front enclosing two kingwood lined drawers, enclosing further compartments, the sides with carrying handles, 27 1/4ins wide (69cms), 17ins high (43cms) 15 3/4ins deep (40cms), on a mahogany stand, fitted with a slide
