Although Robert Cree Crawford was an artist of Landscapes and Marine Views his reputation was largely based on the Portrait Painitng of Scottish Industrialists and Businessmen.

In James Caw's biography of Scottish Painting, Past & Present, Edinburgh 1908, the author writes "His reputation .... is not so general as that of many painters of less account. Well drawn, soundly modelled, markekd by an appreciation of character, his work is admirable in its own way, and maintains a good average standard of accomplishment in the Scottish tradition. Occasionally, also, as in A DUET Mr Crawford has attained through simplicity of seeing and frankness of style a dignity of presentment which is nearer being distinguished than a good deal of would-be "stylish painting".
