The scene may be on Herakles' return journey after capturing the Cattle of Geryon, one of the Twelve Labours. During this expedition he passed through Gaul and fought the Ligurians with the help of stones which Zeus rained down from the sky and which covered the plain of the Crau. However, the river Strymon refused to let Herakles cross and he had to fill up its bed with stones
