The Princely Family zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst
Christie's Amsterdam is proud to present the sale of the contents of Schloss Baumgarten inhabited by the Princely Family zu Hohenhole-Schillingsfürst since the 1970s. This Austrian branch of the important noble family Hohenlohe has decided to sell a selection of the content of the house varying from modest side tables to an exquisite secretaire, from family portraits to antlers from stags shot by their forebears.
Originating in the 12th Century, the Hohenlohe family has played an important role in (Austrian) history and can be linked to other important European houses including the Grimaldis of Monaco. In more recent history the Hohenlohe family was still very much politically engaged. Chlodwig, Fürst zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1819-1901), became prime minister of Bavaria in 1866, on the recommendation of the composer Richard Wagner. In 1871 he entered the service of the German Empire and became one of Bismarck's staunchest supporters. He was appointed German chancellor and Prussian prime minister from 1894 to 1900. Prior to this appointment he had been ambassador to Paris and governor of Alsace-Lorraine.
In 1906 Chlodwig's nephew Konrad (1863-1918), became prime minister of Austria during the reign of Franz Joseph (1830 - 1916) and Elizabeth popularly known as the Empress Sissi. In 1917 Konrad's daughter Franziska (1897-1989), married Maximilian von Osterreich (1895-1952), the brother of the last emperor of Austria, Karl I.
The quality of the objects, which indicate the good eye and taste of the owners, is not the only attractive aspect of this collection; the history and origin of the objects can be traced through various transport labels and coats of arms. There are various pieces in the collection which bear the coat of arms of the Grafen von Lamberg zu Feistritz. Vollrath Graf von Lamberg zu Feistritz (d. 1958, Feistritz) married Dorothea zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1872-1954), Konrad's sister. Through them the Lamberg objects came in the Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst collection in Schloss Baumgarten.
In 1614, Georg Siegmund Freiherr von Lamberg, Herr zu Ortenegg and Ottenstein, became 'Burggraf' in what is now called 'Schloss Lamberg'. This beautiful castle, which used to be a Benedictine abbey in the 12th Century, is situated in the small city of Steyr on the river Enns in Austria. Georg Siegmund von Lamberg was married to Johanna von der Leiter of the famous della Scala family of Verona. Vollrath Graf von Lamberg was the last of the family to be living in the castle. Numerous pieces of furniture included in the sale have transport labels inscribed with the names Steyr and Enns. The Lamberg family crest is to be found on several objects and portraits.
Christie's Amsterdam is honoured to present you this catalogue. With this catalogue we would like to take you through the Baumgarten castle and will hopefully convey the sense of history, good eye and warm surroundings we encountered when we entered the castle for the first time and met the family.
