AN ANGLO-INDIAN VIZAGAPATAM WHITE-METAL MOUNTED ENGRAVED IVORY WORK BOX, early 19th Century
Banded overall with double scrolled foliage and with floral swags, the rectangular stepped and gadrooned hinged lid with handle enclosing a fitted sandalwood interior, the reverse with a hinged hidden compartment and with eight carved spools, the waisted sides enclosing a second fitted interior with pleated red silk to the reverse and with numerous variously-sized compartments containing four further spools, a cut-glass and white-metal scent bottle, various ivory and white-metal tools, above the gadrooned sides with a long drawer fitted with a red leather-lined writing slope and with a well with horn lid enclosing further white-metal and mother-of-pearl implements flanked by cut-glass and silver inkwells, the sides with oval medallions of a mask with feathered headdress, on feathered claw feet, the pocket knife stamped DOUGHTY WEST STRAND, the pencil holder with a bloodstone end stamped S. MORDAN & CO MAKERS AND PATENTERS, a pen knife stamped DOUGHTY 19 WEST STRAND, a further pocket knife with three blades stamped DOUGHTY 431 WEST STRAND and a pair of scissors stamped DOUGHTY and incised dl. 8/6, the lids of the inkwells with London maker's mark GR and date mark for 1836
