A PAIR OF GEORGE III ORMOLU CASSOLETTES by Matthew Boulton

Each with domed lapetted lid with foliate finial to the reverse with a tapering fluted circular socle surmounted by a beaded band and stiff-leaf brace below the urn-shaped nozzle, above the tapering body headed by a guilloche band with flowerheads hung with drapery, on a stiff-leaf brace and circular waisted tapering foot with acanthus collar and fruiting laurel band, on a square base hung with foliate and floral swags and on ball feet, both with a restored swag to the body, minor variations, the interior with printed label EXHIBITION 'ORMOLU' THE WORK OF MATTHEW BOULTON. These candle-vases correspond to a pattern in Matthew Boulton's pattern books and repeat some features of documented vases (see: N. Goodison, Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton, London, 1974, pp. 151-2, pl. 163h)
A pair of vases of this model but with laurel instead of drapery swags are illustrated ibid., pl. 115. A further pair of the latter type and with yellow marble bodies were sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 10 April 1986, lot 2
