This majestic chair is closely related to a small but remarkable group of Stadhoudersstoelen or 'Stadholder's chairs', which were kept in the townhalls of numerous Dutch cities as a special seat for the visiting Prince of Orange. This example is related to two giltwood chairs which were probably executed on the occasion of the visit of Stadholder Prince Willem V and his consort, Princess Wilhelmina of Prussia to the city of Amsterdam in 1768.
