Lot Essay

A set of library steps of a very closely related model, lacking only the cloth treads and hand-pole, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 26 June 1986, lot 109. They had been supplied to the Hoare family of Luscombe Castle, Devon. Sir Richard Hoare was a known patron of Thomas Chippendale the Younger with payments totalling ¨1,400 dating from as late as 1786 (see: L. Wood, 'Lord Walsingham and the Younger Chippendale', Antique Collecting, February 1987, p. 41)
