The hinged rectangular rounded lid above a panelled frieze, enclosing a keyboard with ivory and ebony keys, below a concave frieze with pierced soundfrets, inlaid with foliate panels and with a label inscribed Patent/Muzio Clementi&Comp. Makers to his majesty and the Royal Family/No. 26 Cheapside London, above a gadrooned rim and on gadrooned ring-turned tapering legs with brass caps and castors, the soundboard numbered 224, minor losses, restorations

Lot Essay

Muzio Clementi (1752 - 1832) was born in Rome and one of the great pianist of his time. He competed with Mozart, both as a pianist and as a composer. Clementi was brought to England in the 1760's by a wealthy patron and he enjoyed a very succesfull career in England. Clementi was burried in Westminster Abbey in 1832. During the last 30 years of his life the artist also manufactured piano's. In 1807 his first manufactory burned down, the present lot was made at his factory on number 26 Cheapside, London
