Note: Prepayment of mail to the U.K. became compulsory on 9th October 1858. Prior to this date letters are sometimes found transmitted unpaid, without even the Trinidad 1d. stamp for local postage. Single letters of this period and marked "6" in black manuscript indicate 6d. due on delivery
