Lot Essay

This model of chenets depicting Venus and Vulcan are based on the celebrated model by Jacques Caffieri (see H. Ottomeyer/P. Pröschel et. al. Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. 1, p. 113, fig. 2.4.5) of which an example is in the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle. The daybook of the marchand-mercier Lazare Duvaux for December 1755 lists under no. 2287 to Monsieur de Presle, Un gros feu doré d'or represant Venus et Vulcan. A pair of 18th century chenets of this model sold from the collection of a Lady of Title in these Rooms, 24 May 2001, lot 163.
