With their fluted columnar stiles flanking the padded seat back, downswept arms on baluster-turned supports and square seat on tapering turned legs, this set of fauteuils relate to a pair of fauteuil and a canape by Henri Jacob (maître in 1779) that are illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, 1989, pp. 436-7. Born in Cheny, the same town as his more celebrated cousin Georges Jacob, Henri Jacob achieved success not only for his skill as a menuisier in his own right, but also simply for sharing a last name with his cousin. In fact, the sons of George Jacob were so alarmed at this confusion and the harm any misrepresentation might cause their business that they placed the following announcement in the April 6, 1800 Affiches, Annonces et Avis divers:
Les frères Jacob mettent leurs cleints en garde contre toute confusions entre leur magasin et celui d'Henri Jacob, rue del'Échiquier
Underlining the possibility of such an incident, a fauteuil by Georges Jacob that is remarkably similar in design and profile to that cited above by Henri Jacob is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, ibid., p. 419.
