Lot Essay

The use of engraved ivory-inlaid reserves joined by ivory stringing against an ebony ground such as that on this unusual small table is found on a group of Neapolitan cabinets and tables dating to the late 16th and early 17th Century (see A. Gonzáles-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto: Roma e il Regno delle Due Sicile, vol. 2, Milan, 1984, pp. 186-191.) This group also features the use of animal imagery which is found on this table, and is seen on a table illustrated in Gonzáles-Palacios op.cit, p. 191, pl. 439.
