The bronze group of Christ and St. Thomas by Andrea del Verrocchio is one of the most famous of all renaissance sculptures, and this terracotta bust is ultimately derived from the head of Christ in that group. A number of terracotta busts of Christ are known, all of them based on the Verrocchio Christ (see, for example, Pope-Hennessy, loc. cit.). This one, with its gracefully turning head, is a less iconic image than most of the other known models.
