Lot Essay

Dwarves are often depicted in Kushan sculpture, generally in a position of subjugation beneath a yakshi figure. The yakshi standing on the back of a crouching dwarf symbolizes the triumph over the forces of evil; for a complete example, see S. Czuma, Kushan Sculpture, 1985, cat. no. 34.
