Tibet, 18th Century
Shariputra seated in padmasana on a double lotus base, holding a staff with a stupa finial in his right hand, a book in his left, his robes with painted gold floral motifs and patterned hem, with closely cropped hair and domed ushnisha, inscribed nub-zhe-knor (west); Maudgalyayana similarly seated and attired, holding a bowl in his left hand, his right performing vitarka mudra, inscribed on the reverse Shar (East) for placement, both richly detailed in gold lacquer
