A Pair of Carved and Painted Wood Manuscript Covers
Tibet, 15th/16th Century
The top cover with interior deeply carved depicting Buddha Shakyamuni at center within an elaborate aureole composed of makaras, garudas, and apsaras, with four figures in deeply carved niches including Vajradhara and Bhaisajyaguru, and in shallow relief two stupas at top and the Astamangala below with stippled parasols above the figures and stippled stupas, the exterior with diaper pattern within rectangular and beaded frames with one side carved with kirttimukha mask amidst scrolling foliage; the second cover with interior depicting Manjushri, Shadakshari Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani carved in deep relief and royal Buddhist emblems carved in shallow relief below with stupas stippled on the red ground
