This work was bought directly from the artist by the present owner and it is one of the few early works by Jamini Roy that is painted on cloth. These works are extremely rare and most closely reveal his personal style. The work shows clear influence of the pat paintings of rural Bengal and yet it also reflects the diagramatic organization of Byzantine mosaics.
Although Jamini Roy was not familiar with Biblical stories, he painted several works based on the life of Christ. In a conversation with Mary Milford in 1943, Jamini Roy said 'I am not a Christian. I do not read the New Testament, or any other writing but I meditate on what I have heard and what I know.'
