The Mary of Guise miniature spinning wheel, the pine base painted in red, green and gold with Chinoiserie scenes, within a gilt metal border, the gilt metal wheel and winder mounted with red and blue semi-precious stones, 17½in (44cm) wide, 8½in (21cm) deep, in a later white painted and chased display cabinet fitted with two doors containing a red velvet lined base, bearing a circular paper label inscribed Edinburgh Museum of Science and Arts, 118.62 loan,the case, 22½in (57cm) wide, 14in (35.5cms) high

This miniature spinning wheel was reputedly the property of Mary of Lorraine and Guise, the Queen of James V of Scotland and mother of Mary, Queen of Scots, it was originally part of a collection of Stuart memorabilia belonging to Linlithgow Palace and purchased at the sale of the effects of Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe in 1851
