John, 2nd Earl and only Duke of Lauderdale (1616-1682) fought for Charles II and was imprisoned in 1651 after the Battle of Worcester. He became Charles' Secretary of State in Scotland in 1651 and held all effective power in the country. From 1670, he was one of the five ministers in the Cabal and was, therefore, influential in England too. He fell from power in 1680.
