Further details
Charles II (1630-1685), the eldest son of Charles I, was restored to the Throne in 1660. His political skills maintained him there until his death. Despite saying of himself, "Odd's fish, I am an ugly fellow", he was a womanizer, Nell Gwynne was one of his best-known mistresses, who enjoyed a general popularity because of her humble origins and sense of humour.
