Mary (1542-1587) succeeded to the Throne of Scotland at the age of six days. Most of her childhood was spent in France. She married Francis II (reigned 1559-1560) and returned to Scotland after his death. Her early policies of caution in religion and foreign affairs were nullified by her disastrous second and third marriages and she fled to asylum (as she thought) in England in 1567. As the Catholic claimant to the English Throne, she was a threat to Elizabeth I who imprisoned her and reluctantly agreed to her execution twenty years later after numerous plots. Mary was succeeded by her only child, James VI.
