The present picture incorporates several figures which recur in other works by the artist. The standing figure on the left presents the same pose, with minor variations, as the standing card player on the left of a painting which was with Dowdeswell, London, before 1930 (oil on panel 13 x 17in.). A possibly related drawing formerly belonged to William Bateson. The seated old woman recurs in reverse, again with minor variations, in a drawing of an old peasant couple in the Yale University Art Gallery, signed and dated 1637. Similarly the seated old man can be compared to the figure of 'Luisifer' in the engraving by S. Savery after Quast, Typen van Zeventiende Eeuwsche Vagebonden.
The present picture, refined in execution but vulgar in subject matter, reflects the characteristic satirical nature of much of Quast's work. The figures also recall his drawings of stage characters, although no direct correlation is evident.
