We are grateful to Dr. J. W. Niemeijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of a transparency; he describes it as a 'beautiful and sympathetic portrait' by the artist.
Owing to the rather large proportions of the hand Dr. Niemeijer believes the present picture to be an early work comparable with two paintings listed in his book, Cornelis Troost 1696-1750, Assen, 1973, pp. 213 and 217, nos. 155 and 179. The angular treatment of the drapery highlights and position of the hand is similar to that in the Portrait of Andreas Conring, signed and dated 1726, which was offered at Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 10 May 1971, lot 271a.
We are grateful to Dr. Niemeijer for his help in cataloguing the present picture.
