John, 6th Earl of Wigton (1673-1744), inherited his father's titles in 1681. At the Revolution he went into exile with King James but later returned to Scotland, where he was a vociferous opponent of the Parliamentary Union. Not surprisingly, he was imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle at the outbreak of the Fifteen. Although married three timres, he only left two daughters and was succeeded by his brother Charles.

His sister, Mary (d.1702), married the Hon. Harry Maule on 30th March, 1695. Her husband would have become Earl of Panmure but for the attainder. Their son, William (d.1782), was created Earl Panmure of Forth in 1743. Lord Wigton's first cousin, Jean (d.1683), daughter of John, 4th Earl of Wigton, married George, 3rd Earl of Panmure in 1677.
