Further details
William Maule, later Earl Panmure of Forth (d.1782) was the third but eldest surviving son of Harry Maule, himself brother of the third and fourth Earls of Panmure. His military career started in Marlborough's campaigns and ended at the rank of General in 1770. The title and ownership of Panmure had been forfeited for Jacobitism but he was able to buy back the latter from the York Buildings Company in 1764 for ¨49,157. On 6th April 1743, he had been given the Earldom of Panmure of Forth, an Irish title which allowed him to remain a British M.P. (for Forfarshire, 1735-1782). Upon his death, the Earldom became extinct but the property passed to his nephew, George, Earl of Dalhousie and then to his second son, William, later Baron Panmure.
