The 1949 Open was played at Royal St. George's, Sandwich, after four rounds, Locke tied with Harry Bradshaw of Ireland on 283, in the thirty six hole play-off he won by twelve shots with rounds of 67 and 68. This was Bobby Locke's first Open win.
