The 1957 Open was the last of Locke's four championships and realised him his life's ambition to win at St. Andrews, the home of golf, and his score of 279 was three shots ahead of Peter Thomson, the defending champion. Locke had a remarkable record in the Championship, he competed in his first Open at St. Andrews as an amateur in 1939 and finished ninth, and over the other thirteen he won four times, came second once and fourth twice. This win confirmed Locke as one of the true golfing greats joining the elite group of Varden, Baird, and Taylor in achieving four championship wins
