Arsenal became only the fourth club in history to achieve the illusive 'Double' when they won the First Division Championship with 65 points and the F.A. Cup 2-1, after extra time against Liverpool at Wembley.
Arsenal's achievement was made all the more sweeter when they clinched the Championship in their last match of the season against their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane when Kennedy crowned a remarkable first full season with a deserved winner two minutes from the end in front of 52,000 spectators. The following Saturday they clinched the second part of the 'Double' when they defeated Liverpool in the Cup Final after extra time. With the score 0-0 after 90 minutes Heighway scored for Liverpool after 2 minutes of the first period of extra time and it seemed as though the Cup was beyond Arsenal at this point. However, they refused to panic and ten minutes later Graham Kelly, took advantage of a defensive error and netted the equaliser. The second period of extra time was only seven minutes old when Charlie George ran on to a pass from Radford and cracked a twenty-yard drive past Clemence, the Liverpool goalkeeper, to give Arsenal the Cup.
The 19-year old Kennedy ended the season as top goalscorer with the club on 26 goals. However, if it were not for the broken leg sustained by Charlie George in the first match of the season we may not have seen Kennedy so soon. Kennedy went straight into George's striking position and Peter Storey moved from full-back to mid-field. Kennedy and his striking partner John Radford soon struck up a fine understanding between them. In a season which stretched to sixty-four matches, Kennedy missed only one match.
