Lot Essay

The identification of this watercolour with that exhibited by Peter de Wint in 1814 is supported by the relatively early style influenced by the work of Thomas Girtin.
Harewood Castle originally dates from the 12th Century and was rebuilt for Sir William Aldburgh, messenger to Edward Balliol, King of Scotland in the 14th Century. It was abandoned by the Gascoigne family in favour of Gawthorp House, itself replaced when the estate was bought by Henry Lascelles in the 18th Century by the present Harewood House.
