Philip, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke K.G., P.C. (1757-1834), sat as M.P. for Cambridgeshire until he succeeded his father to the earldom in 1790. He was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1801 until 1804, during which time he was a strong supporter of Catholic emancipation. He had broad interests and was a Fellow of the Royal Society and The Society of Antiquaries. He was also a trustee of the British Museum. He married Elizabeth, daughter of James Lindsay, 5th Earl of Balcarres in 1782.
