Lot Essay

This bookcase with mirrored doors and 'Gothic' arches reflects the influence of Thomas King and A.W.N. Pugin who designed Reformed Gothick furniture. A closely related design by Thomas King, executed in 1835, is illustrated in Edward Joy, The Pictorial Dictionary of 19th Century Furniture Design, Antique Collectors Club, 1980, Page 90.

Thomas King published a number of pattern books of furniture and upholstery between 1829 and 1840. One of his books, The Upholsterers Accelerator, lists some twelve publications by him and gives his address as Gate Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.
