In 1897 a golf enthusiast Mr. Brewster patented the Simplex club. First marketed in 1903 the radical shape of the club head led this range and ones produced by other manufacturers to be called Torpedo clubs. Their use was widespread amongst players until 1910 when all clubs which departed substantially from traditionally accepted forms and shapes were outlawed by the R&A golf clubs rules of golf committee
