In what was regarded as the most exciting F.A. Cup Final since the "Matthews match", 11 years before, West Ham United twice came from behind to beat Second Division Preston North End 3-2. It became clear from the start that this was not going to be a walk-over for the First Division side with Preston matching The Hammers in skill and determination. In fact Preston opened the scoring after 10 minutes with Howard Kendall (the then youngest ever F.A. Cup finalist) starting the move which led to Dawson's shot being parried by Standen with Holden forcing the ball over the line. West Ham, despite looking nervous, equalised immediately. Captain Bobby Moore stole the ball and moved upfield before finding Byrne, who put John Sissons away on a fine run and he calmly shot past Kelly in the Preston goal.
Undaunted by this set-back Preston continued to press for another goal and controlled the mid-field area in which Kendall was prominent and deservedly regained the lead five minutes before the break when Dawson headed home from a corner. In the second-half West Ham began to control the game and eventually a Geoff Hurst header which rebounded off the bar against Kelly in the North End goal and rolled agonisingly over the line for the equaliser. With both teams beginning to tire and extra-time looming Hurst went on one last powerful run through the middle before passing the ball out to Brabrook on the right-wing. He immediately headed for the penalty box and floated a cross to the far post for Boyce to head the ball back into the opposite corner for a dramatic last minute winner
