TOMMY GEMMELL Tommy Gemmell was born in Glasgow on 16th October 1943. He started his career with Meadow Thistle before joining Coltness United. In July 1976 he joined Celtic and he spent ten fruitful years with the Parkhead club. As a left-back and occasionally right-back he was an outstanding example of the modern attack-minded full-back. In fact, on many occasions he looked more like an old-fashioned winger with his intelligent sweeping moves down the flanks and precision passing. He was also famous at long-range shooting and it was this ability which brought Celtic their equalizer in the famous European Cup Victory over Inter Milan in the 1967 final. An integral part of the famous Celtic side of the mid to late 1960's Gemmell won seven League Championship; three Scotland Cup and four League Cup winners medals before being transferred to Nottingham Forest for (40,000 in December 1971. He joined Dundee in July 1973 and won a League Cup winners medal with them when they defeated Celtic 1-0 in the 1973-74 final. In December 1976 Gemmell retired from playing and in June 1977 he became manager at Dundee. He remained at Dens Park until April 1980, and in January 1986 he joined Albion Rovers as manager.
