Aberdeen won their first-ever Premier Division 1 Championship and only their second-ever Division 1 Championship, this season with 48 points, Celtic being runners-up on 47 points. In the 1979-80 Scottish League Cup Aberdeen were defeated by Dundee United 3-0 in the replay at Dens Park after the first match ended in a 0-0 draw.
Derek Hamilton made around fifteen Premier League appearances for Aberdeen in season 1979-80 and whilst he was a substitute in the first game of the 1979-80 League Cup final, he played in the replay at Dens Park
