JIMMY JOHNSTONE
Arguably the greatest outside-right of the 1960's, Jimmy Johnstone joined Celtic from Viewpark F.C. in 1961. He was farmed-out to Blantyre Celtic in season 1961-62 to nurture his talents. Rangers had the upper hand in the early to mid 1960's and won the great majority of the major trophies in this period. However, in season 1965-66 Celtic, with the flame-haired Johnstone on the wing, won the first of their famous 'nine-in-a-row' League Championships. This period was to become, without doubt, the greatest period in Celtic's history. Johnstone was one of only a few players who picked-up a Championship medal in each of these Championship wins. He also won five Scottish Cup and five Scottish League Cup winners medals, and appeared in a further three Scottish Cup and five League Cup finals. Johnstone was also part of the famous 'Lisbon Lions' side that defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in the 1967 European Cup Final, to become the first British and only Scottish side to win the coveted trophy.
Jimmy Johnstone also had an excellent International career and appeared for Scotland on no less that 23 occasions.
In June 1975 Johnstone joined San Jose Earthquake in the USA and in November of the same year joined Sheffield United. Thereafter, he played for Dundee and Shelbourne in 1977 and Elgin City in season 1978-79. In the close season of 1980 Johnstone appeared for Blantyre Celtic as a reinstated junior.
