ROY VERNON Roy Vernon was born in Ffynnongroew, near Holywell, Flintshire on 14th April 1937. He joined Blackburn Rovers in March 1955 after a friend of Johnny Carey, the Blackburn Manager, had recommended him whilst playing for Mostyn YMCA. National Service interupted his career at Ewood Park. However, once the club had been promoted to Division I, he was firmly established as the club's inside-forward, and he made 131 League appearances for the club scoring 49 goals. In February 1960 he joined Everton (by this time managed by his former Blackburn manager Johnny Carey) for (27,000 plus Eddie Thomas. At Everton, Vernon's career flourished and he was the club's leading goalscorer in four out of his five seasons there. As Captain of the 1963 Everton Championship winning side he formed a memorable partnership with the Scottish Internationalist and former Rangers star Alex Scott. In fact, Vernon scored a hat-trick in the final League match of the season against Fulham at Goodison Park to clinch the League title. Between 1960 and 1965 Vernon played 176 League games for Everton, scoring 101 goals, before being transferred to Stoke City in March 1965 for (40,000. At Stoke he made 84 appearances, scoring 22 goals. In January 1970 he joined Halifax Town on loan and made four appearances for the club. Thereafter there were periods with Capetown F.C and Great Harwood from the Northern Premier League. After retiring from football, Vernon had a successful antiques business. Whilst he will always be remembered as a great Captain for Everton in their Championship winning side, Vernon was a loyal servant to his country and made no less than 32 appearances for Wales between 1957 and 1968, scoring eight goals.
